Does constipation require operation to cure?

Does it? Mine is just dark hard stone looking stool. No stomach pains or anything else.

If it’s always hard and dark for you, try a smooth, Orange Citrucel regimen. I use it and it tastes like Tang. After a few days of use, you will become as regular as clockwork, and with no cramps, pushing or pain. You have to use it every day, for it to produce a bm every day, but it completely eliminates the problem. (You are way beyond prune juice, so don’t bother.) Feel better soon.

Do you eat enough fiber? Bran cereal, raisin bran or oatmeal or whole grain breads, drink enough fluids? eat salads, or other green vegetables? if so, and still occurs, need to see doc, have colonoscopy done… do you strain, force bowel movement? every day, or once a week? any wt loss or blood? try altering diet first, avoid processed foods, no nutrition in them anyway..avoid white bread, surgery would be required for ischemic bowel, or no or limited blood supply to bowel due to obstruction, could end up w colostomy, part of intestine brought out through abdomenal wall w pouch attached to collect waste.. can be temporary or permanent. drink some castor oil… or add more magnesium to diet.. see doctor, please

Not likely. Constipation is a symptom of something else and not a disease. In most cases it is caused by poor diet, lack of fluid, lack of exercise of not defecating when the urge and opportunity occurs or even taking certain pain killers. In some cases it can be caused by intestinal diseases. You should initially treat it as it is a symptom of something benign. If it persists, you should see a doctor.

Initially take a stool softener to help the stool pass. For the long term you should change your lifestyle habits.

Increase the fiber intake. You can take fiber supplement or increase your consumption of foods that are high in fiber fruits, green vegetables, whole grain breads, etc. This adds bulk.

Increase your fluid intake especially water. 6 to 8 glasses per day. This helps keep the stool softer.

Increase your exercise. Brisk walking, running or bike riding at least 30 minutes per day 3 - 4 days per week. This helps produce peristaltic action in the colon.

Set aside some time to poo every day and if the urge comes over you find a place to use to toilet. Some people hate to use a public toilet and retain the stool to the point of creating constipation.
