A couple questions about feeding my newborn and constipation?

1) my newborn will have 2oz of breast milk and 2 0z formula does anyone else do this, i had to stop breastfeeding due to scabbed nipples so now im healed and pumping but also giving him formula. he isnt pooping as much as i thought newborns did…probably about 2-3 times a day spread out, is that normal? He pees alot tho. what can i do about his constipation?

2) how long can u store breast milk in the fridge for, i know u can store in freezer for awhile. i pump about 10oz a day and use almost that in a day…

thanks so much! baby is 1 week old today and he is my first <3
and he doesnt get breast milk at every feeding so he does he alot a day
im pumping so daddy can help out with the feedings…my healing isnt going so well and we share the load

He is not constipated at all.

As for scabbed nipples… try to put him to your breast again! It might not hurt anymore. It’s so much better and easier to breastfeed him directly. Pumping and bottle feeding is such a massive pain in the butt!!!!!

His pooping is fine, you don’t have to do anything about that. Just try to get him back on the breast for optimum breastfeeding success. Trust me, I have been there and done that! My son gave me blood blisters and scabs too but they cleared right up and now breastfeeding is a breeze!

well first of all, now that ur nipples r healed again, u can safely start breastfeeding again. my nipples bled really bad for the first couple of days, but i kept feeding her, and it finally healed. it was VERY painful, but the more i did it, the more my nipples got used to it and faster they healed. there were days i screamed and even cried. but now it’s all worth it :)
anyway. ur baby is not constipated. babies who feed on formula, even half breast and half formula, they tend to have less bowel movements, but as long as he has at least 1 bowel movement a day, he’s fine. i also half breastfeed and half bottle feed.

the breast milk can be left out in the room tempt. for 5-7hrs, in the fridge 5-7 days, freezer - 5-7 months.

1. Is there any particular reason you are continuing with the formula? Breastmilk IS the best food for a baby, and will not cause him to become constipated. Sounds like you got off to a bad start, but you can get back on track now. Speak with an LC about getting baby back on the breast. It will be FAR easier in the long run than pumping for every feed. If you opt to continue exclusive pumping, be sure you are pumping often — at least every couple of hours.

2. Breastmilk will keep in the fridge for a few days — but again, why save it? If you pump 10 ounces, feed those 10 ounces. If you then must top up with formula, do so. (BTW, you say he’s getting 2 ounces of breastmilk at a feed — but only eating 10 ounces total? That’s only 5 feeds a day — which is WAYYY low for a newborn. He needs at least twice that — 10-12 feeds a day is typical.
