Dad Needs Help Again - Newborn in pain constipation from soy milk?
Ok, our newborn is about 5 weeks. He was on breastfeeding, but mom had to stop after about 2 weeks. Then he was on the nestle regular milk, and he had diarhea like crazy, like 20 times a day. So the doctor told us to try nestle soy, and soy was working fine for about a week, up until about 2 days ago. He has been crying non stop and is constipated. What should we do? How can we first, fix the constipation while still feeding him, and then what should we try switcing him to. We want our baby just to go normal and be happy.

Call your doctor to verify but when I changed my son’s formula we had the same problem for just a couple of days. It takes their bodies some time to adjust. This is what I did!
Gave my son 2 ounces of water (no more)
moved his legs in a bicycle motion (this stimulates the bowels)
gave him gas drops to help with any gas pains
rubbed his stomach in small circles
and gave him warm baths to help ease the stomach pains
I’d go back to the nestle regular if I were you. In the meantime give him a baby-size glycerine suppository - it’ll help him do a smelly in 5-15 minutes.
Call your doctor for recommendations. They will suggest a different formula such as Alimentum, which smells horrible and tastes horrible but it may work for your baby.
i agree with phelps fan.. my son is on alimentum and it works wonders..
my doctor reccomended staying away from soy for as long as possible.. or not use it at all for that reason..
Aside from switching formulas again or trying to re-lactate, I don’t have much advice to offer, sorry. I mainly just wanted to commend you for coming on here to ask. I wish more fathers did.
Ask your doctor about another formula. My kids have always been on Enfamil with iron and both did great. As for constipation you can put some apple or prune juice in his bottle. There are also gas drops that you can give baby to relieve pressure and good ole tylenol. Also a belly rub will help sooth him.
Many babies who have a milk allergy are also allergic to soy (the proteins are similar). Talk to your doctor - you may need to put your newborn on a special hypoallergenic formula, such as Nutramagin.
When we had a problem with constipation, our doctor told us to use KY and a Q-tip. Make sure the Q-tip is well lubricated and insert into the baby’s anus and give a gentle circular motion. This will give stimulation and loosen the blockage. Be careful not to insert the Q-tip too far, but insert the full tip. This was never painful my baby. In fact, she would stop crying immediately as if she was feeling immediate relief. You may have to do this for 5-10 minutes. My doctor preferred that we do this rather than giving suppositories.
I recommend Similac Advanced formula. It’s supposed to be the closest thing to breastmilk. Also, if you stopped breastmilk and went straight to formula with no ease of transition (like half breastmilk, half formula) his body will react to that. My daughter got diarrhea when we started transitioning her to regular milk, but her body got used to it and now she’s perfectly fine with it. Their little systems just take some time getting used to new things
