Giving a newborn water??

My son will be 6 weeks old tomorrow. About two weeks ago he was having constipation problems and gas problems. I didn’t like my pediatrician and I am in the middle of getting a new one. I heard that If you give your baby water and water down the bottles a little bit it will help him. It did it and it helped the constipation. Now I’m reading online that don’t give any baby water till they are at least 3 months old and do not water down the bottles because it can cause water poisoning. I am wondering if this is even true. Did your pediatrician ever say to give your newborn baby water for gas or constipation and water down he bottles a little bit? Cause I actually heard it from my friend and she said that her pediatrician told her that. Now, I’m really worried. Do I need to bring him to the hospital? Do you think he has water poisoning? Also, should I boil the water before i mix the water with the formula before i give it to him???? I need as much advice to this question as I can get because I’m really worried.. HELP!

My doctor told me to never give my baby water til he reached at least 3 months. And when he did reach 3 month to give him no more than 3 oz of water in a 24 hour period because it is not good for lil babies to take more. If he gets constipated I wouldnt give him water, I would just buy suppositories. I wouldn’t take him in unless you have given him a lot more water than 3 oz in a 24 period and he seems fussier than usual.

No you do not give newborns water honey. Never. Only the formula or breast milk. Yes infants can get water poisoning and other things from drinking just straight water. NEVER get medical advice from anyone but your doctor.

You do not need to boil the water before giving it to him. :) You don’t need to take him to the hospital just don’t do it again.

Dont water the bottles down but do give him water as well as his formula milk. Always boil water before giving to ur baby to make up bottles of milk or just as a drink. When making formula boil the water and leave it 5 - 10 minutes then add the formula, the high heat kills any bacteria in the formula as it is not sterile, make sure u empty the kettle out and refill it before hand so its fresh water. When giving water as a drink boil and let it cool and always check the temperature b4 u give it to him. I always put a tiny amount of fresh orange in the water when my son gets constipated probably a teaspoonful will b enough for the age of ur baby any more cld b too acidic for his tummy. Good luck x

If he is not sick don’t take him to the hospital. But do not give him anymore water. Babies get enough water from breastmilk/formula and they do not need anymore. Water can cause a lot of damage to a baby. My son is 5 months old and I have never given him water.

Babies used to drink water right from the start but now doctors say 6 months, and same with juice. I don’t know how it can be bad since the formula has water in it but I know somebody that gave the 5 month old baby water in the hot summer and for constipation too and had to rush to doctor the next day. Baby got no more bottled water until 6 months because the doctor warned kidney damage. Everything is ok though.

Yes this is true, the nurse told me the same thing. She also said it’s very important to make sure that you measure the water and formula properly because if there’s not enough water they can get constipated and if there’s too much they can get water intoxication and possible seize. I don’t think you need to bring him to the hospital if you only did it a little bit, he should be fine, just don’t keep doing it. I know it’s hard, it was so hot and my son was so hot I wanted to give him cool water but they told me not to so what I did instead was feed him less but more frequently and just used cold boiled water to help cool him off a bit.
If you think he’s constipated you should call your public health nurse, it’s possible that he’s not though, formula babies can sometimes go up to 4 days with out having a dirty diaper, as long as he’s still having lots of wet diapers he’s probably fine, but if you’re worried call the hospital or public health nurse. Good luck.

Just to clear things up: babies don’t drink water like you and I, but it’s safe to give small medicinal doses of water if she’s constipated - like 1 oz. It is best to boil it and wait for it to cool down.
If he’s still constipated though - the best medicine you can use is the suppositories.

your baby is to young right now to have water and u should water down the bottles just make the bottle the normal way when u make the bottle u are making them with water so the baby is getting water from that

im not really sure about that but i read that youre not supposed to give baby water cos breastmilk and even formula has all the water baby needs. i would call a pediatrician… doesnt have to be the one you have now i think if you just call and ask a question they will help you. or you could call La Leche or any other group like that

You are suppose to either boil water for bottles or use distilled water (such as bottled water or nursery water). I would advise not giving him straight water. You are however allowed to give them a small syringe of water. Sometimes babies just get a little thirsty. If you need something for constipation or gas, try using either laxative drops or mylicon gas relief drops.

I think if you notice any weird behavior in your child, then you should take him to the hospital.

<<she said that her pediatrician told her that>>

Do you know people make this up? They want you to believe them, so they claim their pediatrician said it. Now, does it make sense that a pediatrician would say that? No, it doesn’t.

You do not need to bring him to the hospital, but until you talk to your pediatrician (whether you like him or not), stop watering down the formula.

If you have city tap water, you do not need to boil it. If you have well water, then yes.

I was told by my doctor and pediatrician that as long as you are mixing the formula correctly there is no need for water…unless it is really really hot outside, like in the middle of a summer heat wave.

Yes, they all reccomend giving water to babies.

Make sure it is purified (nursery water)
It depends on your living conditions and how clean your tap water is.

Watch him closely and if he starts running a high fever or throwing up call another pediatrician.
